NFL roster shake-up: Key players ruled out or doubtful ahead of Week 1
As the NFL preseason concludes, clubs face significant roster challenges with multiple high-profile injuries and roster moves reshaping their starting lineups for the regular season opener.

With the second week of the NFL preseason now complete, teams are shifting their focus to regular-season preparation, a transition complicated by a particularly busy injury cycle. According to CBS Sports, the final preseason games have served as a critical evaluation period for depth charts and backup roles, while starters turn their attention to the upcoming Week 1 fixtures. The league is currently grappling with a mix of significant injuries to key offensive players and strategic roster adjustments aimed at addressing depth.
One of the most notable developments involves the San Francisco 49ers, who have activated tight end George Kittle from the Physically Unable to Perform list following his recovery from a torn Achilles. While a Week 1 appearance against the Rams in Australia remains a possibility, it is not yet guaranteed. This move contrasts sharply with the situation at the Las Vegas Raiders, where running back Ashton Jeanty suffered an ankle sprain during a non-contact drill. The Raiders are currently unsure how long the injury will keep the former No. 6 overall pick sidelined.
Several other players have been placed on injured reserve, significantly impacting their respective squads. The Los Angeles Chargers officially placed Tyler Biadasz on IR after he suffered ACL damage and other knee injuries during a joint practice. Similarly, the Cleveland Browns placed Alex Wright on IR following a torn Achilles, a move accompanied by the signing of Derek Barnett. The Houston Texans also placed wide receiver Jayden Higgins on IR after he tore his ACL during a joint practice with the Baltimore Ravens.
Further down the roster, the New York Giants are dealing with a serious knee injury to player Austin, which has jeopardised his debut season and may open the door for veteran signings like Odell Beckham Jr. or Braxton Berrios. In the AFC, the Baltimore Ravens confirmed that centre Pinter is out for the season with a torn patella, while the Seattle Seahawks announced that second-round pick Clark will miss several months with a broken ankle.
The New Orleans Saints are also managing a depleted running back corps following an MCL sprain for Alvin Kamara. To address this depth issue, the Saints traded linebacker Deion Jones to the 49ers in exchange for running back Zamir White. This trade highlights the broader trend of teams making mid-camp adjustments to secure their starting lineups before the regular season begins.
As injury news continues to filter in, the impact on season openers remains a primary focus for clubs. From the Indianapolis Colts managing groin and ankle issues for key receivers to the Washington Commanders dealing with a calf strain for Oweh, the league is entering Week 1 with a significant number of availability questions still unanswered.
