NFL analysts, specifically Nate Tice via Yahoo Sports, have identified a cohort of defensive players entering their second or third seasons who are projected to achieve breakout performances during the 2026 NFL season. The analysis targets young athletes on rookie contracts who are poised to solidify starting roles or elevate their status to Pro Bowl contention. While Travis Hunter (Jaguars) is cited as an obvious candidate, the list includes numerous under-the-radar defenders from various franchises, including the Eagles, Bears, Vikings, and Panthers, among others.
Hunter, despite offensive inconsistencies, demonstrated elite coverage skills and a high pressure rate in 2025, ranking sixth among qualifying edge defenders. His ability to get after the passer suggests a ceiling that remains sky high, with analysts noting his agility and speed as key assets for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The expectation is that with a more crystalised playing plan, he will impact games early and often on the defensive side of the ball.
Abdul Carter, the Eagles’ third overall pick, is highlighted for his ability to create disruption in opposing backfields. Although he did not rack up significant sack numbers, his quick pressures and bend suggest his production is in line for a giant jump. Similarly, the Bears’ Austin Booker is viewed as an eye-test prospect whose strong play against the run and improved mental polish indicate he is ready to put it all together after battling injuries in his first two seasons.
Other key projections include Vikings edge rusher Dallas Turner, who showed improved pressure rates in the second half of 2025, and Panthers defender Nic Scourton, who has found a better weight for his play style. The list also features Raiders’ Jonah Laulu, a former seventh-round pick who has established himself as a starter, and Lions’ Tyleik Williams, who is expected to form a formidable run-stopping duo with Alim McNeill.
The analysis extends to interior defensive linemen such as Cardinals’ Walter Nolen and Steelers’ Derrick Harmon, both of whom have shown flashes of high-end talent despite limited playing time or injury concerns. Titans’ linebacker Henry Gray is noted for his elite run stop rate, while Falcons’ Jalon Walker is praised for his versatility in Jeff Ulbrich’s scheme.
In the secondary, Chiefs’ Jaylen Williams is expected to step up following the departures of Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson. Buccaneers’ J.J. Morrison and Packers’ Evan Williams are also projected to make significant leaps, with Morrison’s health being a key factor. Additionally, Saints’ Jonas Sanker, Patriots’ Craig Woodson, Falcons’ Xavier Watts, and Ravens’ Malaki Starks are all identified as young safeties with the potential to anchor their respective defenses through improved game recognition and tackling ability.
