Former WSU coach Mike Leach lands on 2027 NFF Hall of Fame ballot
Policy adjustment allows late WSU coach to qualify for national recognition

The National Football Foundation (NFF) has adjusted its eligibility criteria to include former Washington State University (WSU) head coach Mike Leach on the ballot for the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame. The governing body announced the annual list of candidates on Monday, revealing that the threshold for career winning percentage had been lowered from .600 to .595. This regulatory change directly facilitated Leach’s inclusion, as he passed away in December 2022 with a career record of .596, previously falling short of the original requirement.

Leach’s tenure at WSU from 2012 to 2018 is characterised by significant institutional achievements. He guided the Cougars to six bowl appearances, culminating in a 2018 season that featured an 11-win record, an Alamo Bowl victory, and a No. 10 final national ranking. During this period, Leach was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year in both 2015 and 2018. His implementation of the Air Raid offensive system resulted in the team pacing the FBS in passing yards per game in 2014, 2015, 2018, and 2019.

The ballot also features other figures with strong ties to WSU’s administrative and athletic history. Former quarterback Ryan Leaf, who earned first-team All-American honours in 1997 and finished third in Heisman Trophy voting, remains on the list. Leaf’s collegiate career included leading the Cougars to their first Rose Bowl in 67 years. Additionally, current New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore is listed as a candidate. Moore is the brother of current WSU head coach Kirby Moore and previously served as a quarterback at Boise State.

The NFF’s decision to revise its standards marks a shift in how institutional legacy is evaluated for national honours. By lowering the winning percentage bar, the foundation has opened the ballot to coaches whose careers may have been truncated or whose statistical profiles did not meet previous rigid metrics. Leach’s placement highlights the tension between strict quantitative thresholds and the qualitative impact of coaching tenures on university programmes.

The final inductees for the 2027 class are scheduled to be unveiled in January. The ballot comprises 80 players and nine coaches, reflecting a competitive field where policy adjustments can significantly alter the landscape of eligibility. The outcome will determine which figures are formally recognised for their contributions to college football governance and performance.
