Newcastle United agree £75m Bruno Guimaraes transfer to Arsenal

Newcastle United have agreed a £75 million transfer for midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal, a move that marks the departure of the club’s captain in less than a year. The deal follows a breakthrough in talks this week, with Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson confirming the fee satisfies the club despite initial indications that Arsenal sought a lower price.

Sporting director Ross Wilson stated the club did not intend to sell the captain, but Guimaraes emotionally requested a move. Wilson described the 28-year-old as "very emotional" and noted that the player effectively told the club he no longer wished to play there. While Wilson called the situation disappointing, he emphasised that the player’s stance played a part in the club’s thinking when a financial range was agreed upon.

Guimaraes bid a tearful farewell to teammates and staff at the club’s pre-season training camp in Spain before departing. His exit follows the recent transfers of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, and Alexander Isak to Liverpool. Hopkinson noted that Arsenal had hoped for a smaller fee after lower sums were initially floated, while Newcastle sought a higher number for the influential figure who turns 29 in November.

Hopkinson described the negotiation as involving "very sophisticated actors on each side," asserting that the deal works from a financial perspective for both parties. He suggested the fee represents the highest amount for a player in that position and age bracket, acknowledging that Arsenal are acquiring a special player while Newcastle secure a significant financial return.

The club is now actively seeking a replacement midfielder with more experience, despite having signed four players aged 20 and under this summer. Wilson warned against making mistakes by rushing to sign players just to tick a box before the window closes on 1 September, indicating that further additions may be made to address the squad’s needs.
