New Zealand keep semi-final hopes alive with narrow victory over Scotland

Defending champions New Zealand have maintained their trajectory in the Women’s Twenty20 World Cup after securing a six-wicket victory over Scotland at The Oval in Bristol on Tuesday. The win keeps the Black Caps’ semi-final aspirations within reach, although the path forward remains steep, requiring a win against unbeaten England and a favourable outcome from the West Indies.
New Zealand’s chase was nearly derailed by a precarious position of 26-3 during the powerplay. The innings was salvaged by a pivotal 101-run partnership between Izzy Sharp and Brooke Halliday. Sharp, who scored a career-best 62 from 43 balls, provided the aggression, while Halliday remained unbeaten on 41 to guide the team to 132-4 with 10 balls to spare.
Scotland, batting first in their first international match against New Zealand, had started strongly. Opener Darcey Carter scored 72 not out, reaching 50 off 37 balls, and the hosts were cruising at 45-0 in the powerplay. However, momentum shifted when Sophie Devine took two wickets in her first over of medium pace. New Zealand’s bowlers, including Devine, Nensi Patel, Bree Illing, and captain Melie Kerr, restricted Scotland to 131-7.
Kerr finished with figures of 3-17, including a double-wicket maiden in the 19th over. The match also highlighted defensive lapses for New Zealand, who dropped 12 catches across four games, including two in this fixture. Kerr praised Sharp’s performance, describing the knock as special and highlighting the player’s potential to become one of New Zealand’s best ever.
New Zealand must now top the unbeaten England side next Saturday at The Oval and hope the West Indies drop points to progress to the semi-finals. Other matches played on Tuesday included Sri Lanka against Ireland and Australia against Pakistan.
