Voters in New York are casting ballots in Democratic primaries on Tuesday to determine nominees for the November midterms, a contest that will influence control of the US House of Representatives and impact President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda. The elections highlight a shift within the party, with progressive and democratic socialist candidates challenging incumbents and centrist figures. Early voting occurred from June 13 to June 21, with polls open from 6am to 9pm local time (10:00 GMT to 01:00 GMT Wednesday).
In New York’s 10th District, former comptroller Brad Lander is challenging incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman. Lander, backed by Zohran Mamdani and Bernie Sanders, has called Israeli military action in Gaza “genocide” and Israel’s system “apartheid,” while Goldman, backed by AIPAC and Nancy Pelosi, rejects these claims. Lander has also advocated for a ban on US weapons to Israel, though he has opposed the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.
Darializa Avila Chevalier, endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), is challenging incumbent Adriano Espaillat in the 13th District. Espaillat has criticised Avila Chevalier’s experience and past social media posts, while she has apologised for some statements but doubled down on her progressive platform. The race has been marked by debates over experience, policy, and past social media posts.
In the 12th District, eight candidates are vying to replace outgoing Representative Jerrold Nadler. Recent polls suggest Alex Bores and Micah Lasher are frontrunners, overtaking Jack Schlossberg. The district, which spans from the Upper West Side to the Flatiron District, has seen outside groups pour millions into the race.
In the 17th District, Democrats seek to unseat Republican incumbent Mike Lawler. Cait Conley is currently leading in recent polls among the five Democratic challengers. The district, located in the Hudson Valley, is considered a toss-up, with the outcome expected to play an outsized role in determining who gains a majority in the US House of Representatives.
