New Mexico State names Trey Hedden presumptive starting quarterback
Hedden cited for size, intelligence and leadership, though redshirt junior Adam Damante remains a key challenger for the role.
New Mexico State head coach Tony Sanchez has identified transfer Trey Hedden as the presumptive starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Speaking at the Conference USA Kickoff Show on July 20, Sanchez stated that Hedden, who transferred from Furman, "has the nod" heading into fall camp. The Aggies are scheduled to open their season on August 29 against Florida State.
Sanchez cited Hedden’s physical stature, prior starting experience, football intelligence, and leadership as key factors in his preference. During the Conference USA Media Day event on July 21, the coach elaborated on the decision, noting that Hedden’s size and decision-making capabilities align with the programme's requirements. "He's a big six-three, 230-pound kid," Sanchez said, adding that Hedden had a strong spring and demonstrated clear understanding of tactical nuances in the film room.
Hedden’s primary competition for the starting role is returning redshirt junior Adam Damante. Damante started the final two games of the previous season for New Mexico State after an injury to regular starter Logan Fife. He also gained starting experience at Northern Arizona in 2023. While Damante provides a familiar presence within the roster, Sanchez indicated that Hedden’s extensive background as a full-time starter gives him the current advantage.
The starting quarterback position is not yet officially confirmed. Sanchez noted that Hedden must "fight to keep it" and that other players will push him during training. The coach emphasised that while Hedden has established himself as the frontrunner, the role remains contingent on continued performance and development throughout the summer and into the season.
Hedden previously played for Furman, where he was the full-time starter in 2024, throwing for 2,967 yards and 17 touchdowns. He also made the All-Southern Conference Freshman Team in 2024. Beyond the field, Hedden has participated in the Bataan Memorial Death March in March and was selected to model New Mexico State’s new black Adidas uniforms.
