New Jersey Devils General Manager Sunny Mehta has initiated a comprehensive restructuring of the franchise’s roster and coaching staff, aiming to rectify the team’s underperformance in the previous season. The overhaul signals a distinct departure from the administrative approach of former General Manager Tom Fitzgerald, focusing on fiscal discipline and the preservation of long-term prospect assets.
Central to Mehta’s strategy is the decision to trade goaltender Jacob Markstrom before his new contract commenced. The move addresses both on-ice underperformance and significant fan dissatisfaction, while simultaneously avoiding the financial liabilities associated with Fitzgerald-era contracts. Mehta has since signed David Rittich and re-signed restricted free agent Nico Daws to manage immediate goaltending uncertainty, a strategy described as deferring a permanent solution for one season.
In the forward line, Mehta acquired Anthony Mantha on a two-year deal that reportedly came in below market predictions. Crucially, the contract contains no trade protection clauses. This stands in sharp contrast to the predecessor’s tendency to include extensive protections, a practice that reportedly hindered the team’s flexibility and ability to engage in mid-season trades.
The restructuring also extends to the coaching staff, with Mehta dismissing former goaltending coach Dave Rogalski. The decision asserts Mehta’s authority despite previous support for Rogalski by Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Marty Brodeur. The move follows criticism regarding Rogalski’s ability to develop goaltenders, with former Devils netminders reportedly showing improved performance after leaving his system.
Mehta’s approach also involved an attempt to sign Barrett Hayton from the Utah Mammoth via an offer sheet, which Utah matched, retaining the player. Despite this setback, Mehta has maintained a disciplined stance on draft picks, avoiding frivolous trades to protect the prospect pool. The administration’s immediate goal is to establish a sustainable operational vision without mortgaging the club’s future.
