Neville’s assessment follows a turbulent opening week for the traditional powerhouses, where both clubs struggled to find consistency against lower-ranked opposition.
The former Manchester United defender made his remarks on The Gary Neville Podcast, describing the current campaign as the "most unpredictable" in recent memory. He attributed this volatility to a wave of managerial changes and significant squad turnover at the top of the league, noting that teams previously accustomed to dominating the table are now being tested by well-organised sides such as Brentford and Hull.
Neville highlighted the transitional nature of Manchester City, who are navigating the departure of Pep Guardiola and the arrival of Enzo Maresca. He described the loss of Rodri as a "massive blow" to the club’s structure, pointing to their 2-1 victory over Bournemouth as a scramble rather than a display of control. Similarly, he viewed Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Newcastle as a result that, while acceptable in the short term, underscores the need for substantial work under new manager Andoni Iraola.
In contrast, Neville pointed to Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat of Coventry City as evidence of a side already operating at a higher level of efficiency. The Gunners, who also secured a 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield, are currently odds-on favourites with bookmakers despite 37 games remaining in the season. Neville stated he is "the most sure I've ever been" that a champion will emerge clearly from the first week of fixtures.
With the traditional rivals in flux, Neville identified Chelsea as the most likely team to finish second in the table. He cited the Blues’ squad depth and their absence from European competition as key advantages, arguing that the lack of continental fixtures will allow them to maintain focus on the domestic campaign.
Neville is set to join Jamie Carragher on Monday Night Football for the Fulham versus Chelsea match, where the pair will reveal their full season predictions. However, he reserved the right to adjust his view on Chelsea’s standing if they perform poorly in that upcoming fixture, acknowledging that his current confidence could result in "egg on my face" if the season unfolds differently.
