Nepal floods leave thousands displaced as search continues for more than 5,600 missing
A flash flood in remote Rasuwa district swept away villages, forcing about 200 people into a temporary school shelter as aid deliveries and rescue operations continue.
A catastrophic flash flood has devastated Nepal’s remote Rasuwa district, sweeping away villages and displacing thousands near the country’s border with China. More than 5,600 people remain missing, according to a report by France 24, although the geographic scope of that figure is unclear.
About 200 people whose homes were destroyed or buried are sheltering in a school around 30 kilometres from the Nepal–China border. Others are living in overcrowded camps, where access to electricity and basic supplies remains limited.
Aid workers face journeys of up to nine hours along winding dirt roads to reach communities near the disaster’s epicentre. Supplies include rice, lentils, oil, tents and solar power banks.
Search and rescue operations are continuing in the flood zone. Authorities said a Chinese national was rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel, while two Nepali workers were recovered from another tunnel filled with mud.
Survivor Ranjina Tamang told France 24 she had lost 11 members of her family and did not know whether others were missing or dead. Her account has not been independently confirmed as part of a death toll.
