The National Basketball Association has issued lifetime bans to two individuals following a court intrusion incident during Game 1 of the NBA Finals. The sanctions were confirmed by a league spokesperson on Thursday, addressing an event that occurred at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Wednesday night.
The disruption took place with 6:28 remaining in the fourth quarter, while the New York Knicks held a 92-86 lead over the host San Antonio Spurs. A fan ran onto the court holding a cellphone in his right hand, approaching Spurs star Victor Wembanyama and Knicks centre Mitchell Robinson near the three-point line. The individual was swiftly pushed away by two security guards as he attempted to take a photograph.
Replays indicated that Wembanyama appeared confused and smiled as the fan approached. The player later stated he had never encountered such a situation and noted the surprise was comparable to an incident in January 2024 involving a bat crossing the court during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The league spokesperson confirmed that a second individual involved in the incident would also face a lifetime ban from all NBA arenas. The arrested fan was removed from the premises, though specific legal charges beyond the immediate arrest were not detailed in the initial reports.
Following the apprehension, play was further delayed due to a confusion over possession. Spurs guard Dylan Harper lost control of the ball while guarded by Knicks forward Mikal Bridges. The officiating crew called for a jump ball at centre court as they could not determine which team last had possession. Wembanyama won the tip, allowing the game to resume.
Despite the interruption, the Knicks maintained their advantage and won the game 105-95. Spurs coach Mitch Johnson downplayed the severity of the disruption, stating he did not view it as a significant event given the speed with which security removed the individual.
