NASA marks 50 years since Viking 1 first views Martian surface
Fifty years on from the first ground-level imagery of Mars, the agency highlights the technological achievement of the Viking programme and its enduring legacy in planetary exploration.

NASA is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Viking 1 lander’s successful touchdown on Mars, an event that occurred at 5:12 a.m. PDT on 20 July 1976. The mission marked the first time humans viewed the Martian surface from the ground, with the first image appearing on monitors approximately 40 minutes after touchdown.
Mission controllers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory erupted in cheers upon learning that the lander had survived its descent through the thin Martian atmosphere. The initial image was transmitted line by line, from left to right, revealing the rocky terrain for the first time. Dr Thomas Mutch, leader of the Viking lander imaging team, described the moment the picture began to form on the screen.
“I studied the black screen, waiting for that narrow strip that will signal the first few lines of the first picture. And it appeared. A sliver of electronic magic,” Dr Mutch said. “Rocks and sand are visible and — finally at the far right — one of the spacecraft foot pads, a symbolic artifact that stamps our accomplishment with the sign of reality.”
The Viking 1 lander became NASA’s first robot to explore the Martian surface and initiate the search for signs of life in our solar system. The mission architecture included a twin lander, Viking 2, which touched down six weeks later to explore a different region of the planet. Two mission orbiters, which delivered the landers to Mars, continued to collect data from space and assist with communications to Earth.
Fifty years after the historic landing, NASA continues to highlight the scientific legacy of the Viking programme. The agency directs public interest toward the findings of the mission and the broader history of discovery on Mars, noting that the search for biological activity remains a central objective of planetary science.
