NASA Establishes State Hubs to Grow Technical Aerospace Workforce

NASA has awarded approximately $10.5 million to seven institutions to establish the NASA Aerospace Skilled Technical Workforce Hubs, commonly referred to as NASA State Hubs. The initiative is designed to strengthen and streamline state-based pathways for students entering skilled technical roles within the aerospace industry. By investing in these state ecosystems, the agency aims to accelerate the development of technical roles to meet the increasing talent demands of the space sector.

The funding, distributed across seven states, will support these institutions in acting as strategic conveners. Over the next three years, the hubs will align industry employers, community colleges, high school career and technical education programmes, and workforce systems. This coordination is intended to facilitate direct connections between employers and job seekers, ensuring that students are prepared for high-demand positions.

The programme specifically targets roles that require advanced STEM knowledge and technical skills, including welders, electricians, and machinists. The selected organisations will use the funding to create programmes that build critical skills identified by industry leaders. Additionally, the hubs will work to illuminate career pathways through education and apprenticeships, providing clear routes for students to enter the workforce.

Elaine Ho, associate administrator for the Office of STEM Engagement at NASA Headquarters in Washington, stated that the need for technical talent is already urgent and will continue to grow as the agency returns humanity to the Moon and sets its sights on Mars and beyond. She noted that NASA is uniquely positioned to act as a catalyst and convener to accelerate aerospace workforce development and foster the next generation of technicians.

The cooperative agreements for the NASA State Hubs are funded by the Office of STEM Engagement through its Next Gen STEM Project. This office advances NASA’s mission by boosting the nation’s research capacity, building technical expertise, and strengthening participation in aerospace fields. The Next Gen STEM project extends this impact by preparing high school and community college students for future careers through strategic partnerships and competitive awards.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to develop the vital skills needed to power what NASA describes as a Golden Age of exploration and innovation. By focusing on state-based hubs, the agency seeks to create a robust network that supports both educational institutions and industry partners in addressing workforce gaps.
