Mystics surge into playoff contention as Dallas Wings face slump

The Washington Mystics have rapidly ascended the WNBA standings, climbing from ninth place to fifth after securing a seven-game winning streak. The surge has brought the franchise within two games of the third-placed Las Vegas Aces and just half a game behind the fourth-placed Indiana Fever. This performance marks a stark reversal for a team that sat under .500 with an 8-9 record six weeks prior, following a loss to the Connecticut Sun.

The Mystics’ turnaround is anchored by a defensive efficiency that currently leads the league, with a rating of 104.7 over the last seven games. While their defence has historically been their strongest asset, the team has finally achieved offensive parity during this stretch. Their offensive rating has climbed to 113.6, ranking sixth in the league over this period, a significant improvement from earlier in the season when they were the league’s worst offensive unit.

Central to this offensive revival is centre Shakira Austin, who has averaged 21.7 points on 54.8 per cent shooting over the last seven games. Austin’s impact is quantifiable; the Mystics boast an offensive rating of 111.6 when she is on the floor, compared to 88.6 when she sits. Her contributions, alongside 10.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, have been instrumental in shifting the team’s fortunes from a potential last-place finish to legitimate playoff contention.

Roster adjustments have further bolstered Washington’s prospects. The team recently signed Betnijah Laney-Hamilton off waivers from the New York Liberty, adding perimeter scoring to a group that has lacked shot-making depth. Additionally, the Mystics are set to receive a 2027 lottery pick via a swap with the Chicago Sky, securing future assets as they navigate the final stretch of the season.

In contrast, the Dallas Wings are experiencing a notable decline, having lost six of their last eight games. While Washington capitalises on a third-easiest remaining schedule featuring matchups against the Chicago Sky, Los Angeles Sparks, and Phoenix Mercury, Dallas faces increasing turbulence as they attempt to stabilise their performance.

The Mystics’ current form, which includes a historic quadruple-overtime victory against the Portland Fire, has all but secured a playoff berth. With their recent trajectory, the franchise, which has not won a playoff series since their 2019 championship, is positioned to potentially earn home-court advantage in the first round.
