Mystics' Johnson ejected, escorted off by police
Sydney Johnson apologises for 'losing cool' during 32-point defeat to Atlanta Dream

Washington Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson was ejected and escorted off the court by police during the team’s 109-77 loss to the Atlanta Dream on Saturday. The incident occurred at the 3:52 mark of the third quarter, when Johnson engaged in a prolonged argument with officials regarding a foul call on player Alicia Florez Getino.

The dispute arose while Getino was defending Atlanta’s Angel Reese. Johnson was seen being held back as he argued the decision, with assistants attempting to guide him back to the bench. Three police officers then intervened to walk Johnson from the court, a process he completed calmly after the confrontation.

Following the game, Johnson addressed the media, stating he had "lost his cool" but affirming that the officials acted appropriately. He declined to elaborate on the specific nature of the foul that triggered the incident, noting instead that he wished to focus on the team’s development rather than the officiating.

Mystics forward Kiki Iriafen, who scored a team-high 24 points, attempted to diffuse the situation on the court. Iriafen defended Johnson’s intentions, stating that the coach always has the players' back and was trying to protect them. The Mystics, who hold the league’s youngest roster with an average age of 23.4, were trailing 64-43 at the time of the ejection.

Johnson later clarified that he is not a proponent of using ejections to advocate for a team, despite the youth of his roster. He emphasised that coaches should coach, players should play, and officials should officiate without external pressure. The defeat marked the worst margin of victory for the Atlanta Dream this season, while the Mystics (4-5) are scheduled to host the Indiana Fever on Monday.
