The franchise, which was considered a title favourite prior to the season due to a strong overseas squad and a core of Indian stars who had recently won the T20 World Cup 2026, has seen its fortunes turn sharply. While the team secured a victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening game at the Wankhede Stadium, they have since lost seven times and won only one game.
With the bat, Pandya has scored just 146 runs in eight innings, with a best score of 40 runs this IPL 2026 season. He has been dismissed seven times and has batted at a low strike rate of just 136.44. His bowling has been equally ineffective, having picked up just four wickets in the seven innings he has bowled. His bowling economy rate stands at 12.26, making his spells extremely expensive.
The broader team struggles extend beyond the captain, as almost all other Indian recruits have miserably failed to recreate the magic of the Indian team that fans witnessed at the T20 World Cup 2026. Jasprit Bumrah has looked off colour and batters of all teams have dominated against him, a very rare sight in IPL or international cricket. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has struggled with his batting form, while Rohit Sharma has been nursing an injury since last month and has hardly featured for the team this season.
Tilak Varma is the only Indian player who has contributed with the bat in at least one game, as he scored a century off just 45 balls against the Gujarat Titans. This lack of consistency in team selection and performance has left the five-time champions staring at a possible bottom-place finish, and given their current form, they are unlikely to make it to the playoffs and fight for the championship.
