Mukasa double helps West Ham secure first Championship win
Divine Mukasa struck twice as the Hammers defeated relegated rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-2 at the London Stadium.
West Ham United have claimed their first league victory of the season with a 4-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the London Stadium. The result marks a significant early step for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side following their relegation from the Premier League last term, easing immediate pressure on the manager.
Divine Mukasa, the on-loan Manchester City midfielder, was the standout performer for the hosts, scoring twice in a match where West Ham initially struggled against the run of play. His first goal came in the 33rd minute with a rising drive from more than 20 yards that deflected off the underside of the crossbar.
The hosts extended their lead in the 40th minute when Jarrod Bowen converted a penalty awarded after Andre’s lunge on Joel Piroe. Bowen sent goalkeeper Jose Sa the wrong way to slot home, though Wolves responded quickly in the 43rd minute. Marshall Munetsi turned the ball past Mads Hermansen after winning a chase with Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Mukasa added a second goal in the 53rd minute, looping the ball off Nasser Djiga’s boot to leave Sa helpless. West Ham made it 4-1 in the 64th minute when Mavropanos headed in a rebound off the crossbar following a deflected header.
Wolves managed to pull a goal back in the 69th minute through an own goal by Mavropanos, who diverted the ball into his own net while sliding to stop Jackson Tchatchoua. The defeat marks the first loss for Wolves under new manager Cesar Peixoto, a side that could have gone top of the table with a victory.
The match was attended by Amanda Staveley, who is heading a consortium looking to buy a significant stake in West Ham. Her presence at the London Stadium added an extra layer of institutional interest to the club’s early season campaign.
