Russia threatens more Kyiv strikes and tells foreign nationals to leave
Russian foreign ministry calls for foreign nationals to leave capital following one of the largest aerial assaults of the war

The Russian foreign ministry has issued a stark warning that Kyiv will face a fresh wave of systematic strikes, specifically targeting decision-making centres, command posts, and drone manufacturing facilities. The announcement followed one of the most significant aerial assaults on the Ukrainian capital since the start of the war, prompting Moscow to call for foreign nationals and diplomats to leave the city as soon as possible.

The threat comes in the wake of a large-scale attack on Saturday night that killed four people and injured approximately 100 in Kyiv and surrounding areas. Russian officials justified the barrage and the subsequent threats as a direct response to a Ukrainian strike on a student dormitory in Starobilsk, claiming 21 deaths. Ukraine’s military has denied targeting civilians, stating its forces struck an elite Russian drone unit in the area.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the Russian threats as "shameless blackmail," asserting that Moscow is effectively attempting to intimidate the foreign diplomatic corps. Kyiv has urged international allies to increase pressure on Russia, noting that the security threat posed by Moscow remains consistent with previous years despite Ukraine’s development of a sophisticated air defence system.

The Saturday night assault involved dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles, hundreds of drones, and a hypersonic, nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile fired at Bila Tserkva, 90km south of Kyiv. The strikes damaged or destroyed non-military targets including the Chernobyl Museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, a shopping centre, a market, and residential buildings in the Lukanivka area.

During a phone call on Monday evening, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to evacuate American diplomats from Kyiv. Following the conversation, Rubio described the major strikes from either side as a reminder of why the conflict is terrible and stated that the US is prepared to help facilitate an end to the war.
