Moscow and Kyiv face coordinated overnight strikes as drone and missile attacks escalate
The conflict intensifies with 600 drones launched at Moscow and a strike on a Rostov fuel facility, while Russian forces report territorial gains and a drone breach in Romanian airspace.
Ukraine has conducted one of its most significant aerial operations of the conflict, launching approximately 600 drones at the Moscow region overnight. The assault, which began on the evening of 15 August and continued until 06:30 local time on 16 August, resulted in injuries to three individuals. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that air defences destroyed 201 of the drones, marking a substantial escalation in Kyiv’s long-range strike capabilities.
Concurrently, the Ukrainian military confirmed a strike on a missile fuel production facility in Russia’s Rostov region. The military stated that the targeted company manufactures solid rocket propellant for multiple launch rocket systems and various missile and airborne weapons. This operation underscores a strategic shift towards targeting Russian logistical and industrial infrastructure supporting the war effort.
In retaliation, Russian forces launched a missile attack on Kyiv early on Sunday. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that falling debris caused fires in at least two districts, including a non-residential area in a northern suburb and another south of the city centre. Several vehicles were damaged by fire, and the city’s military administration confirmed one person was injured. Witnesses reported explosions across the capital as firefighters responded to the blaze at a city book market.
The violence extended beyond the immediate front lines, with a drone breaching Romanian airspace. Romania’s defence ministry confirmed that a Spanish F-18 jet, deployed on NATO duties, intercepted the drone at 05:01 local time after it entered from Moldova. Debris fell in an unpopulated area of the Galati region near the Ukrainian border. A NATO military headquarters spokesperson indicated the drone appeared to be Russian.
On the ground, Russian forces reported capturing the villages of Pershomarivka in the Donetsk region and Kudiivka in the Kharkiv region, according to state news agency TASS. Additionally, local governor Vitaly Korolyov noted that debris from enemy drones damaged a Wildberries warehouse in the Tver region, though no injuries were reported and smoke dissipated quickly. The coordinated strikes highlight the widening scope of the conflict and the increasing frequency of cross-border incidents involving NATO members.
