Monaco have formally withdrawn from a club-to-club agreement to sell midfielder Lamine Camara to Chelsea for £47m. The French club informed Chelsea in writing just after the 11pm transfer deadline, effectively reneging on a deal that had been fully agreed upon.
The withdrawal was triggered by Monaco’s successful renegotiation of a separate sale involving Folarin Balogun to Everton. While the specific terms of the Balogun deal were not disclosed, it provided Monaco with the leverage to pull out of the Camara transaction.
Chelsea, who were seeking a midfield replacement after Enzo Fernandez joined Manchester City in a joint-record £125m transfer, described Monaco’s decision as “extraordinary and deeply unprofessional.” Camara had been set to sign a six-year contract with Chelsea, pending a medical examination.
Despite the collapse of the Camara deal, Chelsea chose to honour their commitment to sell Fernandez to Manchester City. They had the option to pull the plug on the Fernandez move but decided to stick to their word, leaving them in search of alternative midfield options.
Roma’s Manu Kone was also shortlisted as a potential option for Chelsea, while the club had previously explored midfielders within the Premier League. The uncertainty over Chelsea’s next move remains, with it unclear whether they will pursue other options immediately or wait for the next transfer window.
In other transfer news, Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has completed a season-long loan move to Serie A side Como. The move follows his displacement at Stamford Bridge due to the arrival of Emi Martinez from Aston Villa.
