Moeller Crusaders secure OHSAA state tournament berth with regional title victory
The Crusaders’ 14th state tournament appearance marks their first since the 2023 championship, with senior pitchers Matt Ponatoski and Jake Gaerke leading the defensive effort.

The Moeller Crusaders baseball team has secured their place in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournament for the first time since 2023, following a decisive victory in the Division I regional finals. On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Moeller defeated Centerville 7-0 to clinch the Region 3 championship and advance to the state semifinals.
The win marks the Crusaders’ 14th appearance in the OHSAA state tournament and positions the team to pursue its 10th state title. The squad, currently holding a 24-6 record, overcame a Centerville team that finished the season with a 25-5 record. The victory ensures Moeller’s return to the highest level of state competition after a three-year absence from the final tournament bracket.
Senior pitcher Matt Ponatoski initiated the defensive effort, pitching five scoreless innings to keep Centerville off the scoreboard. Fellow senior Jake Gaerke completed the shutout by pitching the final two innings, finishing the game as a two-hitter. The combination of the two seniors provided the stability required to maintain control throughout the match.
Moeller established early momentum in the first inning, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded single from Teagan Cumberland. The Crusaders maintained a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning, where they extended their advantage to 7-0. The offensive output in the sixth inning provided sufficient insurance to secure the regional title without further scoring required.
Moeller will advance to the state semifinals on June 11, where they are scheduled to face the champion of Region 1. The opponent for the semifinal match remains to be determined, as the Region 1 championship is set for June 4. That match will feature either Perrysburg or the winner of the regional semifinal between St. Ignatius and Massillon Jackson.
