MLB Locks in Late-October Window for 2026 World Series

Major League Baseball has confirmed that the 2026 World Series is scheduled to conclude in October, barring rainouts. This marks the second time since 2020 that the championship series will end in the tenth month, a significant shift from recent years where the competition frequently extended into November. The series is set to begin on October 23, with Game 7 potentially taking place on October 31.

The announcement, released on Monday, detailed the 2026 playoff format, which retains the twelve-team structure introduced in 2022. Under this framework, the top two seeds in each league receive first-round byes. The remaining spots see the No. 3 seed facing the No. 6 seed, and the No. 4 seed playing the No. 5 seed in best-of-three Wild Card Series. The higher seed will host all Wild Card matchups, which are scheduled for consecutive days from September 29 to October 1.

Scheduling adjustments have been implemented to manage pitcher workloads. The American League Division Series will feature an extra scheduled off day between Games 1 and 2. This format allows a team to have the same pitchers start Games 1 and 4, as well as Games 2 and 5, on normal four days’ rest. In the previous season, the National League Division Series was the division that featured this extra off day.

The Division Series for both the American and National Leagues will commence on October 3. In the best-of-five matchups, the top seed plays the winner of the 4-vs-5 Wild Card series, while the No. 2 seed faces the winner of the 3-vs-6 series. The higher seed will host Games 1, 2, and 5 if necessary.

Following the Division Series, the National League Championship Series is scheduled to start on October 11, followed by the American League Championship Series on October 12. Both are best-of-seven series. The World Series has concluded in November in 2001, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2025, with the latest instance extending to November 5 in 2022.
