Dodgers rally past Royals in Skubal’s uneven Dodger Stadium debut

The Los Angeles Dodgers secured a 6-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night at Dodger Stadium, marking the beginning of a seven-game homestand with a win that tested the team’s resilience. The result improved the Dodgers’ record to 71-48, demonstrating an ability to secure outcomes in games that did not initially appear to be within their control as the season approaches its most critical phase.
Tarik Skubal made his Dodger Stadium debut, pitching five innings and allowing three earned runs. The reigning ace, who recently joined the club in Chicago, threw 95 pitches, 66 of which were strikes, while striking out six batters. This outing marked only the fourth time in 18 starts this season that Skubal failed to complete a sixth inning.
The game’s momentum shifted significantly in the third inning when Skubal left an 0-2 slider over the plate. Royals batter Jac Caglianone capitalised on the error, hitting a two-run home run that extended Kansas City’s lead to 3-0. Skubal also allowed four hits, walked two batters, and hit one batter during his time on the mound.
The Dodgers began their comeback in the same inning when Hunter Feduccia doubled to start the rally. Despite the early deficit and an uneven performance from their starting pitcher, the team managed to overcome the deficit to secure the victory. Skubal later noted that he competed well and gave his team a chance to win, acknowledging the strong support from the offense, defence, and bullpen.
Freddie Freeman emphasised that there would be no panic within the clubhouse despite the challenging nature of the game. Skubal, who has now made two starts as a Dodger with 12 strikeouts and five earned runs allowed, expressed surprise at the crowd size, noting that 40,000 to 50,000 fans were in their seats 40 minutes before the game.
