MLB honours Roberto Clemente with reported No. 21 jersey patches
Players in Tuesday night’s games were reported to wear patches honouring the Pittsburgh Pirates legend’s career and charitable legacy.
Major League Baseball is marking Roberto Clemente Day on 15 September with players in Tuesday night’s games reported to be wearing No. 21 patches on their jerseys.
The tribute recognises Clemente’s career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and his charitable work, which continues through the Roberto Clemente Foundation. Clemente played all 18 of his MLB seasons with Pittsburgh from 1955 to 1972.
Fox Sports reported that Clemente finished his career with 3,000 hits, 12 Gold Gloves and 15 All-Star selections. He won the National League MVP Award in 1966 and helped the Pirates win the 1960 and 1971 World Series.
Clemente was named the 1971 World Series MVP after recording 12 hits, two home runs and four RBIs against the Baltimore Orioles. MLB renamed its Commissioner’s Award as the Roberto Clemente Award in 1973.
The annual award recognises a player for community commitment and service, extending the institutional recognition of Clemente’s influence beyond his achievements as a right fielder.
