Yankees target Rockies catcher; Braves seek offensive reinforcements; Nationals’ García Jr. draws interest

Major League Baseball front offices have shifted their operational focus from the recently concluded amateur draft to urgent trade negotiations, with the league’s deadline set for Monday, 3 August. The proximity of the deadline has triggered a wave of activity as clubs assess their postseason viability and address roster deficiencies.

The New York Yankees are reportedly targeting Colorado Rockies All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman to address significant offensive struggles behind the plate. New York’s catchers have ranked near the bottom of the league this season, posting a 29th-place batting average of .175 and a 30th-place slugging percentage of .269. Goodman, who leads all catchers with 27 home runs, offers a substantial power upgrade, although he carries defensive concerns and a high strikeout rate. He remains under team control through 2029.

Atlanta Braves executives are prioritising offensive additions, specifically at shortstop or designated hitter, to complement a pitching staff currently hampered by injuries. Despite the imminent return of several key arms, the Braves’ offence has stagnated, hitting .231/.298/.378 as a team since June 1. The club is looking to bolster its lineup even as star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. prepares to return from a hamstring strain.

Washington Nationals first baseman Luis García Jr. has emerged as a notable trade asset, with multiple teams enquiring about his availability. García, 26, has demonstrated increased power production after shifting from second base, hitting 15 of his 20 home runs in his last 33 games. His value is further enhanced by an additional year of team control through 2027.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres have been identified as potential suitors for García, given their need for first base upgrades and their position on the outside of the postseason race. For clubs like Arizona and San Diego, acquiring García would provide long-term stability, as his contract control would remain valuable even if they miss the current playoffs.
