Donovan Mitchell demands that more people respect James Harden's greatness
Cleveland guard argues media narrative unfairly dismisses veteran’s impact following playoff sweep

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell has publicly challenged the media narrative surrounding teammate James Harden following the team’s elimination from the 2026 NBA Playoffs. After the Cavaliers were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, Mitchell used his post-Game 4 press conference to argue that the criticism directed at the veteran guard was unjustified and overlooked his historical contribution to the sport.

The Cavaliers, who acquired Harden midway through the 2025-26 season, saw their playoff run conclude in a four-game series. Despite a solid postseason performance that included victories over the Toronto Raptors and Detroit Pistons in the earlier rounds, the team was unable to overcome the Knicks. Mitchell, who scored 31 points during the series, noted that his own efforts were overshadowed by the sweep, but he emphasised that Harden was bearing the brunt of the post-series scrutiny.

"I think y'all ignore his greatness in a major way. This man changed the game of basketball in ways we’ve never seen before," Mitchell said. He argued that the current sports culture is overly focused on championship rings, leading to a tendency to dismiss players who do not secure titles. Mitchell described this approach as "truly unfair," urging observers to recognise the broader impact Harden has had on the game beyond the immediate results of the 2026 playoffs.

The New York Knicks secured their first NBA Finals berth since 1999 with the decisive sweep. Karl-Anthony Towns led the Knicks with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while OG Anunoby contributed 17 points. Landry Shamet provided a significant spark off the bench with 16 points, helping New York maintain control throughout the series. The Knicks held a commanding lead in the decisive game, leading by as many as 45 points in the fourth quarter.

As the Cavaliers head into the offseason, the organisation plans to make roster improvements with the aim of returning to the NBA Finals. Mitchell stated that the team is holding itself accountable for the loss but remains confident in their ability to compete. He described the current situation as a process, similar to the development phase the Knicks underwent in recent years, and expressed belief that the Cavaliers can succeed if they maintain cohesion and continue to work hard.
