Mistral models power Mozilla’s Firefox AI browsing assistant
Firefox Smart Window beta launches with Mistral models in France and North America, with the United Kingdom and Germany expected to follow later in 2026.
Mozilla has partnered with Mistral to bring Mistral’s AI models to Firefox Smart Window, the browser’s AI browsing assistant. The beta is now available to users in France and North America.
Smart Window can help users interpret complex searches, recall information they previously viewed and draw on open browser tabs when producing responses. The companies have not specified which Mistral models are being used.
Privacy, user control and choice are central to the partnership, according to Mozilla and Mistral. They say Smart Window conversations are not saved on Mozilla’s servers by default, while Mistral has agreed to zero data retention.
The companies also say their models are being trained and fine-tuned for regional languages, dialects and cultural context. The aim is to give users responses that better reflect local nuance.
Smart Window is expected to reach users in the United Kingdom and Germany later in 2026, although no firm launch date has been provided. Mozilla and Mistral present the partnership as a way to give multiple AI providers and open-source technology a role in the browser.
