Middlesbrough seek Southampton expulsion from play-off final over spying claims
Middlesbrough have formally called for Southampton to be removed from the Championship play-off final, citing allegations of spying at their training ground. The English Football League is conducting an inquiry, though Middlesbrough will not be permitted to participate in the proceedings.

Middlesbrough have issued a formal statement demanding that Southampton be expelled from the Championship play-off final. The request follows serious allegations that Saints’ staff engaged in spying activities at Middlesbrough’s Rockliffe Park training ground last Thursday.
The club argues that the alleged conduct violated the principles of sporting integrity and fair competition. In their statement, Middlesbrough asserted that a sporting sanction is the only appropriate outcome given the severity of the accusations.
The incident occurred in the build-up to the first leg of the play-off semi-final at the Riverside. Southampton subsequently defeated Middlesbrough in extra-time during the second leg on 23 May, securing their place in the final against Hull City.
The English Football League (EFL) has initiated a hearing to investigate the allegations. However, Middlesbrough will not be permitted to take part in this hearing. The governing body is proceeding with the inquiry independently of the aggrieved club’s direct participation.
The outcome of the EFL hearing remains uncertain and will determine the future of the upcoming match. If the league decides to expel Southampton, the play-off final against Hull City may need to be rescheduled.
