Mid-Buchanan Volleyball Retains Core Roster Ahead of District Championship Rematch
The Dragons, who finished 20-12-4 last season, look to senior leadership and junior standout Tatum Moss to overcome their narrow district final loss to East Buchanan.
Mid-Buchanan High School’s volleyball program is entering the upcoming season with a level of roster continuity that head coach Ron Underwood describes as unique in his 38-year coaching career. The Dragons have returned 11 of their 12 varsity players, a retention rate Underwood noted was the first of its kind in his tenure. This stability comes as the team seeks to build on a 20-12-4 record from the previous season, where they narrowly lost to rival East Buchanan in the district championship.
The squad’s leadership structure remains largely intact, anchored by three senior captains: Camryn Atha, Bailey Coman, and Myia Dillman. All three earned All-District and All-Conference honours last season before injuries impacted their playing time. Atha, an outside hitter, recorded the second-highest kills per set on the team before missing half the year with an injury. Coman, a middle hitter, was similarly productive, ranking second in both kills and blocks.
At the setter position, Dillman returns with 877 assists from the previous campaign. The senior leadership group has emphasised the value of their existing chemistry. Dillman noted that the team’s extensive shared history means less time is spent learning each other’s tendencies, allowing for more immediate on-court connection. This veteran core is supported by five other returners who received postseason honours last year.
The team’s offensive potential is heavily reliant on junior Tatum Moss, who established herself as one of Missouri’s top players in Class 2 during her sophomore year. Moss led the team in kills and digs by a wide margin last season, securing unanimous first-team All-Conference and All-District selections, along with a spot on the Class 2 All-State team. The transition from sophomore to junior year is often a critical developmental phase for high school athletes, and Moss is expected to elevate her performance further.
Underwood has set a high benchmark for the team’s offensive output, describing his ideal roster as having five players capable of achieving between 250 and 350 kills each. With the majority of the previous year’s productive lineup returning, the Dragons aim to translate this experience into a successful campaign that addresses their previous district final shortfall against East Buchanan.
