Microsoft Clarifies Xbox Refund Windows and Processing Timelines
New guidance from Xbox Support outlines the conditions for reclaiming funds on digital games and subscriptions, highlighting the 14-day approval window and 72-hour processing delays.

Microsoft has issued detailed guidance regarding the conditions under which customers can request refunds for Xbox digital purchases and subscriptions. The clarification addresses common queries surrounding digital buyer’s remorse, establishing clear parameters for eligibility while emphasising that approval is not automatic.
For digital games, refunds are typically approved if the request is submitted within 14 days of purchase and the user has not accumulated a significant amount of playtime. Microsoft does not define a specific hour count that guarantees acceptance, leaving the determination of significant playtime to their discretion. While the 14-day window is the standard for smooth processing, requests can be lodged up to 90 days after purchase, though acceptance is not guaranteed and Microsoft reserves the right to limit the number, type, or value of refunds granted to an individual purchaser annually.
The policy covers Microsoft Store digital game offers, Xbox apps excluding movie and television content, digital gaming bundles, and durable game content. However, most in-game consumables and virtual currency cease to be refundable once they have been purchased or utilised. Pre-orders offer a distinct pathway; customers may cancel a digital pre-order through their order history up to 10 days before the launch date. Once billing has occurred, a standard refund request becomes necessary.
Subscription refunds operate under a separate framework. Eligibility generally exists within 30 days of the initial purchase or before the first recurring billing date, whichever occurs first. For recurring subscriptions, a refund for the most recent charge may be available if cancelled within 30 days of payment, but this right is limited to one instance per account for each Xbox subscription product. Microsoft notes that turning off recurring billing halts future charges but does not automatically refund the current paid period.
Processing times for refunds can extend up to 72 hours. Once issued, funds are returned to the original payment method within three to five business days, although financial institutions may take longer to post the transaction. Customers whose requests are denied may appeal by replying to the decision email, but they are prohibited from submitting the identical request again through the online refund page.
