The Miami Dolphins have confirmed the death of Manny Fernandez, a defensive lineman who played a critical role in the franchise’s historic undefeated 1972 season, at the age of 79. The club announced the passing on Tuesday, describing Fernandez as “one of the best players in Dolphins history.”

Fernandez joined the team as an undrafted player in 1968 and spent eight seasons with the organisation before departing as a legend. His tenure included two Super Bowl victories, most notably the 1972 campaign where the Dolphins went undefeated in both the regular season and playoffs. Fernandez received significant acclaim for his performance in Super Bowl VII, a 14-7 victory over Washington, where he was credited with 17 tackles and received down-ballot MVP votes.

Although the NFL did not formally recognise sacks until 1982, Fernandez is credited with 35 sacks during his career, including contributions in both Super Bowl wins. His excellence at nose tackle was evident early in his career, earning him MVP votes during the 1970 NFL season, which marked the first of five consecutive playoff appearances for the franchise.

Fernandez’s legacy was cemented through various honours, including his induction into the Dolphins’ Ring of Honor in 2014. While the entire 1972 squad was inducted to the team’s honour roll, Fernandez remains one of the few players from that era to receive individual recognition on the Ring of Honor. He was also voted onto the Dolphins’ All-Time team in 2007 and appeared on numerous All-Super Bowl teams.

The recognition of his impact extended beyond the team’s internal accolades. In 2015, Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab listed Fernandez as the 10th greatest Super Bowl player of all time. The Dolphins’ statement on Tuesday marked the end of an era for a player who helped define the franchise’s most successful period, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and resilience.
