Threads has a VR app now
Social platform reaches 500 million monthly active users as it integrates across immersive hardware

Meta has released a dedicated Threads application for Meta Quest virtual reality headsets, extending the social platform’s reach into immersive hardware. The launch follows the app’s recent arrival on Ray-Ban Display augmented reality glasses and coincides with the company’s announcement that Threads has surpassed 500 million monthly active users.

The new application is available for download from Meta’s store and offers a comprehensive suite of features within the virtual reality environment. Users can browse feeds, create posts, like and reply to content, visit profiles, search for topics, and watch videos. Meta describes the application as a “pretty full-featured” tool designed to integrate social interaction directly into the VR experience.

In a statement regarding the release, Meta emphasised the app’s role in enhancing social connectivity within virtual spaces. The company stated that the app was designed to make using VR more social, allowing users to keep up with conversations during games, discuss media with friends, or perform quick check-ins between daily tasks.

This move represents a continued effort by Meta to distribute Threads across a diverse range of devices. The rollout to virtual reality headsets comes shortly after the platform’s debut on Ray-Ban Display AR glasses last month, signalling a broader strategy to embed the social network into various forms of wearable and immersive technology.

The expansion occurs against a backdrop of shifting consumer sentiment regarding Meta’s hardware monetisation strategies. Recently, the company paused a planned $20 monthly subscription for the ‘Conversation Focus’ feature on Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses following public backlash over fees and rate limits. Critics had argued that the feature’s local processing capabilities did not justify the cost, prompting Meta to halt the plan.

Meanwhile, the Threads platform continues to grow its user base, recently crossing the 500 million monthly active user milestone. This growth places it in a competitive landscape where other major tech platforms are also reporting significant engagement, such as Google’s Gemini app, which recently reached one billion monthly active users.
