Meta expands AI integration to Threads private messaging in global rollout
The update allows users to privately converse with the assistant, share content, and ask follow-up questions, marking a strategic move to reduce reliance on third-party tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini.

Meta announced on Monday the commencement of a global rollout for its Meta AI chatbot within Threads direct messages. The integration enables users to privately converse with the AI assistant, share specific Threads content such as posts, images, links, and videos, and pose follow-up questions. This development extends the artificial intelligence capabilities previously available in the direct messaging systems of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to Meta’s X rival.
The strategic objective behind the integration is to consolidate user engagement within Meta’s proprietary ecosystem. By providing a seamless avenue for AI interaction, the company aims to discourage the utilisation of competing third-party assistants, notably OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google Gemini. The update positions Threads as a self-contained destination for information and recommendations, reducing the friction for users who might otherwise leave the platform to seek external AI support.
While the direct messaging feature is now accessible to users worldwide, the deployment of Meta AI in Threads’ public feeds remains restricted. Testing in public spaces continues in a select number of markets, including Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore, where the functionality was initially introduced in May. Meta has indicated that broader expansion of the public feed integration is contingent upon user feedback from these pilot regions.
To address user preferences regarding the visibility of automated content, Meta has introduced new controls. Users can mute the @meta.ai account, utilise the “Not interested” option on AI-generated posts, or hide AI replies that appear on their own content. These measures are designed to manage the presence of the chatbot in public discussions while maintaining its accessibility in private channels.
The rollout underscores Meta’s broader effort to embed generative AI across its social portfolio. Although the public feed integration allows users to tag the account and view AI posts in specific regions, the company has not yet defined the specific criteria or timeline for extending this functionality beyond the current select markets. The immediate focus remains on the private messaging experience, which is now live globally.
