All Threads users can now DM Meta AI
Social media giant integrates conversational tool into private chats, mirroring features on Facebook and WhatsApp

Meta has completed a global rollout of Meta AI direct messaging capabilities for all Threads users, extending the conversational tool into private chats. The update follows similar integrations already available on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, marking a significant expansion of the artificial intelligence assistant’s presence within the company’s social ecosystem.

The new feature enables users to send Threads posts, images, links, and videos directly to Meta AI for one-on-one conversations. According to Meta, the move responds to community feedback requesting more context from the AI without requiring public sharing of interactions. The company stated that the direct message experience provides greater flexibility, allowing users to ask follow-up questions and explore topics in depth within private settings.

While the direct messaging function is now available worldwide, testing of Meta AI within Threads’ public feeds remains limited. The public feed integration was initially launched in May across five specific markets: Argentina, Malaysia, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. In those regions, users can view Meta AI’s posts and tag the account using @meta.ai, a functionality that has not yet been expanded to the broader global user base.

Access controls for the AI account remain restrictive. Users are unable to block the Meta AI account outright. However, the platform offers mitigation options, allowing users to click “not interested” and mute any Meta AI replies. The specific timeline for any potential changes to these blocking limitations has not been disclosed.

This product expansion occurs against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny regarding Big Tech capital expenditure and the sustainability of AI investments. Following recent guidance from Alphabet that impacted investor sentiment regarding free cash flow preservation, market participants are closely monitoring how major technology firms balance aggressive AI integration with liquidity management.
