Meta doubles Louisiana data centre capacity as investment surpasses $50 billion
The social media giant’s commitment to local infrastructure and tax revenue boosts contrasts with pushback from environmental groups over financing structures and energy consumption.

Meta announced on Monday that its Hyperion data centre in Richland Parish, Louisiana, will expand to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity, marking a significant escalation in the company’s artificial intelligence infrastructure strategy. The total investment in the project has risen to more than $50 billion, nearly doubling the facility’s original projected capacity of over 2 gigawatts, which was designed to support the training of large language models.
The expansion underscores the intensifying capital race among Big Tech firms as demand for computing power continues to outstrip supply. Meta, which currently operates or is constructing 32 data centres globally with 28 located in the United States, has pledged to invest $600 billion in U.S. infrastructure and jobs over the next three years. The Louisiana project follows comments made last year by U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated the facility would cost $50 billion.
In addition to the compute expansion, Meta committed to investing over $1 billion in local infrastructure improvements, including roads, water, and wastewater systems. Since breaking ground in December 2024, the company reported that local Louisiana businesses have secured more than $1.6 billion in contracts. The increased tax revenues generated by the project have also resulted in annual bonuses of up to $50,000 for teachers in Richland Parish, representing a 400 per cent increase from the previous year.
The announcement arrives amidst heightened scrutiny from environmental and consumer groups regarding the energy-intensive nature of AI buildouts. Earlier this year, the U.S. environmental law group Earthjustice requested an investigation into the project’s financing arrangements. The request was denied, but Earthjustice had warned that the structure could unfairly shift project costs onto utility customers if Meta withdrew from the project before the utility recovered its investment.
This development reflects a broader trend where tech giants are deploying massive capital to secure the hardware necessary for generative AI. While the economic benefits for local communities in Louisiana are substantial, the financing models and environmental impacts of such large-scale data centres remain points of contention for regulators and advocacy groups monitoring the sector’s rapid growth.
