Memphis Grizzlies confirm death of forward Brandon Clarke aged 29

The Memphis Grizzlies have confirmed that forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29. The NBA team issued a statement describing Clarke as an "outstanding team-mate" and expressing that they are "heartbroken" by the loss. Clarke was pronounced dead at a home in California’s San Fernando Valley following an emergency call, though a specific cause of death has not been officially released by the organisation, his family, or local authorities.

Clarke, who was born in Vancouver and was a dual citizen of Canada and the USA, had played 309 NBA games in total, scoring an average of 10.2 points per game. He was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2019 and traded to the Grizzlies shortly after. His career was highlighted by a selection to the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team in 2020. He attended college basketball at San Jose State and then Gonzaga before entering the professional league.

The forward had played only two games during the 2025–26 season due to injuries, with his last appearances occurring in December. Despite his limited playing time this season, Clarke remained active with the team, travelling to the UK in January for the Grizzlies’ win over the Orlando Magic in London. During that visit, he attended an NBA community event.

Clarke’s death follows a legal incident last month, in April, when he was arrested in Arkansas on charges including speeding and possession of a controlled substance. The Grizzlies noted that Clarke’s impact on the organisation and the greater Memphis community would not be forgotten.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver paid tribute to Clarke, describing him as a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with "enormous passion and grit". His agency, Priority Sports, also issued a statement, describing Clarke as the "gentlest soul" who was loved by friends and family.
