McBurnie returns as Pocognoli names first Scotland squad
Hull City forward Oli McBurnie is back in the Scotland squad after five years, with seven uncapped players included in Sebastien Pocognoli’s first selection.
Oli McBurnie has returned to the Scotland squad for the first time since 2021, giving him the chance to win his 17th senior cap under new head coach Sebastien Pocognoli.
The Hull City forward has never scored for Scotland, although he converted a penalty in the shootout that secured the team’s place at the delayed Euro 2020 finals.
Pocognoli’s first selection also includes seven players yet to win a senior cap: Luis Binks, Colby Donovan, Jon McCracken, Josh McPake, Stephen Welsh, Luke Graham and Robbie Ure.
Scott Bain, Kieron Bowie, Josh Doig, Lennon Miller and James Wilson have been recalled, while Che Adams has been omitted from the squad.
Pocognoli said McBurnie suited the style of play he wanted to establish and described the selection as a “new beginning”. He also said the squad could have been larger, with the door remaining open to players outside the current group.
Donovan has featured for Celtic while covering for injured Canada international Alistair Johnston. Graham previously attended Scotland’s pre-World Cup training camp without playing, while Bain and McCracken have been selected in earlier squads under Steve Clarke.
