Mbappé cites tactical failures in France’s World Cup exit
France’s 2-0 semifinal defeat to Spain ends their bid for a third consecutive final, with Kylian Mbappé highlighting midfield errors and pressing issues under manager Didier Deschamps.

Kylian Mbappé has publicly questioned France’s tactical approach following their 2-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup semifinal, held on Tuesday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The result ended France’s bid to reach a third consecutive World Cup final, with the team’s captain describing the performance as sloppy and citing a critical lack of communication in the midfield.
Mbappé, who finished the tournament with eight goals to tie Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot, identified specific structural failures that allowed Spain to control the tempo. He noted that France was outnumbered in the centre, stating, "We were three against two in midfield and against Spain, that's hard." The French captain pointed to Spain’s Fabian Ruiz and Rodri having ample time on the ball, suggesting that a man-to-man press should have been employed to disrupt their rhythm.
The match, which saw Spain score through Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro, marked the third consecutive victory for the European champions over France. Manager Didier Deschamps attempted to alter the dynamic with second-half substitutions, introducing Désiré Doué and Rayan Cherki, but these changes failed to impact the outcome. Reports indicate that Deschamps is set to step down from his role following the conclusion of the tournament.
Mbappé acknowledged that France failed to execute their high-pressing game plan, which was designed to prevent Spain from installing their preferred style of play. He highlighted technical deficiencies, noting that even when possession was recovered, the team’s first touches were insufficient to create meaningful threats. "We didn't play the game we wanted, technically, tactically," Mbappé said, adding that Spain respected their own game plan while France did not put all the necessary ingredients together.
Substitute Rayan Cherki echoed the captain’s sentiments, describing the performance as missing elements technically, tactically, and in desire. "In so many ways, France was missing everything today," Cherki said. As the captain, Mbappé accepted full responsibility for the loss, stating he had no problem taking the blame for the team’s failure to advance.
France is scheduled to play the loser of the Argentina-England semifinal in the third-place match on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida. The World Cup final is set to take place in New Jersey on Sunday.
