Mbappe challenges Arbeloa over squad hierarchy and tactical structure

Kylian Mbappe publicly questioned Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa following the team’s 2-0 La Liga victory over Real Oviedo at the Santiago Bernabeu. The French forward, who had missed the previous two matches due to a thigh injury, entered the game in the 69th minute and was subsequently booed by the home crowd upon his late substitution.

In a departure from standard La Liga protocol, Mbappe spent seven minutes addressing the media in the mix zone. He claimed that Arbeloa had identified him as the “fourth forward” in the squad, a statement the manager vehemently denied. Mbappe also expressed concern over the team’s tactical execution, stating that while Real Madrid started the season strongly in La Liga and the Champions League, they “lost it in the second half” and allowed their structured playing style to slip away.

Reports from Diario AS indicate that Mbappe’s public discontent stemmed from three specific incidents. The first involved his benching for the El Clasico match against Barcelona; it is alleged that after learning he would not start, Mbappe informed medical staff that he experienced increased pain in his leg, having keenly desired a starring role in the fixture.

The second point of friction relates to perceived criticism of his attitude by the manager. Arbeloa had previously stated that Real Madrid was built on players “covered in mud and sweat, without ego, not players in smoking jackets,” a comment widely interpreted as a critique of Mbappe’s approach. The forward had missed the preceding match against Espanyol due to injury.

The third issue concerned Mbappe’s introduction against Oviedo. Rather than entering the pitch alongside key players such as Jude Bellingham and Dani Carvajal, Mbappe was sent on in isolation. This was perceived by the 27-year-old as a deliberate exposure to the Bernabeu crowd’s reaction, compounding tensions that have seen his relationship with the club’s supporter base deteriorate.
