Kyrie Irving landing spots: Five possible trade destinations if Mavericks move on
New team president Masai Ujiri weighs options as Dallas seeks assets for Cooper Flagg

The Dallas Mavericks have completed a significant organisational purge, parting ways with head coach Jason Kidd following the earlier dismissal of general manager Nico Harrison. Under the direction of new team president Masai Ujiri, the franchise is executing an all-out reboot centred on young star Cooper Flagg. This structural shift has intensified scrutiny regarding the future of veteran guard Kyrie Irving, who is 34 years old and recovering from a torn ACL sustained during the 2025-26 season.

Ujiri has publicly expressed curiosity about how Irving might complement Flagg, citing high praise from Kevin Durant regarding the guard’s unique skill set. However, the Mavericks face a stark asset disadvantage, controlling no first-round picks until 2031. Consequently, the front office is exploring trade options to secure the draft capital necessary to build around Flagg, with CBS Sports analyst Marc Stein expected to report trade interest in Irving this offseason.

Among the potential destinations, the Minnesota Timberwolves are viewed as the most logical fit. Minnesota lacks a secondary offensive option to support Anthony Edwards and could offer a 2028 first-round swap and an unprotected 2033 pick. While the Timberwolves have invested heavily in their current roster, adding Irving could provide the lethal offensive pairing needed to challenge top Western Conference teams, despite the risk of compromising their defensive infrastructure.

The Houston Rockets present a less certain scenario. Although a reunion with Kevin Durant is possible, the Rockets possess significant draft capital and may wish to avoid sidelining young guard Reed Sheppard. The Pistons are considered a slightly better fit due to Cade Cunningham’s ability to share ball-handling duties, though salary matching remains a challenge given the expiring contracts of Tobias Harris and Kevin Huerter.

Other potential destinations include the Milwaukee Bucks and the Toronto Raptors. The Bucks’ interest hinges on Giannis Antetokounmpo extending his contract, potentially involving future first-round picks. Meanwhile, the Raptors could acquire Irving as a short-term upgrade alongside Scottie Barnes, leveraging Ujiri’s previous relationships with players such as Immanuel Quickley and Brandon Ingram to facilitate a deal.
