Massachusetts coach expands memorial tournament for ALS research

Paul Seaver, the Wellesley Boys’ Varsity Basketball Coach, oversaw the final day of the annual Wally Seaver High School Invitational at Mass Premier Courts in Foxborough on Sunday. Established in 2012 as a Father’s Day gift for his father, the tournament has evolved into a significant regional fundraiser for ALS research. The event honours the memory of Wally Seaver, a respected basketball coach in Franklin, Milford, and Wellesley, who was diagnosed with the disease in 2011 and passed away in 2013.

Since its inception with just 16 teams, the tournament has expanded significantly, attracting approximately 150 teams this summer. Participants have travelled from across New England, as well as from New York and Florida, to compete in the event. The growth has transformed the local fundraiser into a major gathering, with several schools establishing the tournament as an annual tradition.

Paul Seaver emphasised that maintaining his father’s legacy remains his primary objective. He noted that he is nearing the point of having spent half his life without his father, describing him as his best friend and biggest role model. The tournament was originally created to ensure his father’s name remained alive, serving as a mechanism to keep his memory and values active within the community.

The event’s impact extends beyond fundraising, with other regional coaches highlighting its educational value. Quincy Boys Varsity Coach Matthew Ramponi stated that the tournament helps teach students that basketball extends beyond the court, fostering awareness of ALS and encouraging community service. Similarly, Stonington Connecticut Boys’ Varsity Coach Jay Wosencraft noted that the event encourages young athletes to think beyond themselves and prioritise giving back to a cause.

Seaver expressed a personal desire to witness a cure for ALS within his own lifetime. He acknowledged the support of the coaches who bring their teams to the event, stating that his goal is to do his part to help achieve that outcome. The tournament continues to serve as a focal point for raising both funds and awareness for the disease, reflecting the enduring influence of Wally Seaver’s coaching career.
