More than 40,000 people have been evacuated from the Cap Ferret peninsula in southwest France as forest fires continue to spread across the region. The evacuation order affects a highly touristic area, with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirming that the blaze has consumed more than 10,000 hectares of land.
The most significant fire originated in Saumos and is currently threatening the Cap Ferret peninsula within the Gironde department. Minister Nuñez stated that 32 fires are active across the region, presenting a complex challenge for emergency services as they attempt to contain the spread of the flames.
Approximately 80 houses have been burnt as a result of the wildfires. While the scale of the destruction is substantial, authorities have reported no casualties at this stage. Officials note that the situation remains volatile, and the final tally of property damage may change as the fire situation evolves.
The evacuation numbers and the area burned are currently treated as initial estimates. The status of casualties is based on current official reporting, though this could be updated if injuries are identified later.
