Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has indicated he is considering a withdrawal from international football following the team’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final. The 33-year-old, who previously secured the tournament for Argentina in 2022, posted on Instagram expressing deep disappointment and questioning whether it was time to step aside from representing his country.
Martinez, who has earned 67 caps for Argentina, played every minute of the nation’s eight matches in the 2026 tournament. He kept two clean sheets while conceding eight goals, but the campaign ended in extra time at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Spain defeated the defending champions with a 105th-minute goal from Ferran Torres, assisted by Nico Williams, to secure their second World Cup title and complete a double of Euro 2024 and World Cup 2026 under manager Luis de la Fuente.
In his social media statement, Martinez reflected on the outcome, writing, "The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it's time to step aside." He apologised to his country and teammates, adding, "I truly tried my best to help my country and my team-mates." The goalkeeper also noted his personal aspirations, stating, "I dreamt we'd win it again, I dreamt of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more."

Lionel Messi retired from international football in 2016 following a Copa America final defeat, a move that reshaped the national team’s direction.
