Marlins rotation reshuffle: Garrett steps in as Snelling sidelined with UCL sprain

The Miami Marlins have been forced to reshuffle their starting rotation after Robby Snelling was placed on the injured list with a sprained UCL. The injury, which occurred during Snelling’s MLB debut, was confirmed via MRI to be a partial tear of the ligament. While no decision has yet been made regarding surgery, the timing represents a significant disruption for the young pitcher and the team.

Braxton Garrett is set to take Snelling’s place, likely starting on Thursday against the Minnesota Twins. Garrett arrives with a 2.30 ERA in six Triple-A starts this season. Although he has experienced some control issues, he has recorded an uptick in fastball velocity and swinging strike rates. Garrett previously posted a 3.66 ERA in 159.2 innings at the major league level in 2023 before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2024.

Beyond Miami, fantasy managers are looking to the waiver wire for other pitching opportunities. Bryce Miller of the Seattle Mariners returned to the rotation with an average four-seamer velocity of 97.6 mph, an increase of 2.8 mph from his 2025 averages. Miller generated eight swinging strikes over 5.1 innings, allowing just one walk and two runs.

Ryne Nelson of the Arizona Diamondbacks has recorded three consecutive strong starts after introducing new sinker and cutter offerings. Excluding two difficult outings in late April, Nelson holds a 3.03 ERA. Meanwhile, Grayson Rodriguez of the Los Angeles Angels struck out 18 batters to two walks over 9.2 innings in two minor-league rehab starts ahead of his expected return.

On the offensive side, Justin Crawford of the Philadelphia Phillies has hit a home run to dead centre at Fenway and stolen two bases in 11 games in May. Colorado Rockies first baseman TJ Rumfield recorded his third three-hit game in two weeks, hitting .317/.364/.561 in May with three home runs and an 18.2 per cent strikeout rate.
