IPL 2026: Massive blow for LSG as star player leaves camp before final two games
South African batter leaves team for personal reasons ahead of crucial fixtures

South African batter Aiden Markram has departed the Lucknow Super Giants camp and returned to South Africa for personal reasons, a move that removes him from the remainder of the IPL 2026 tournament. The departure, confirmed by reports from ESPNcricinfo, occurs just hours before the team’s scheduled clash with the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, meaning Markram will also miss the final league fixture against the Punjab Kings on May 23.

While Lucknow Super Giants are already eliminated from playoff contention, the timing of Markram’s exit is viewed as a significant setback for a squad that has shown recent improvement. The team has won two of its last three matches, displaying greater competitiveness after a disappointing campaign, but the loss of a key batter ahead of its final two games remains a notable administrative and sporting disruption.

The absence of Markram carries wider implications for the tournament’s structure, as Lucknow’s remaining opponents are still fighting for a place in the top four. The Rajasthan Royals currently sit sixth on the points table with 12 points from 12 matches and remain firmly in the qualification race despite a worrying slump in form. The Royals have lost three consecutive matches, including two defeats against the Delhi Capitals, and have suffered three straight losses at their home venue.

Rajasthan’s path to the playoffs hinges on their upcoming fixtures. A victory against Lucknow would lift their tally to 14 points, placing immediate pressure on their rivals, while a subsequent win against the Mumbai Indians would take them to 16 points, a score that could guarantee qualification regardless of other outcomes. The team could potentially qualify with 14 points if other results fall in their favour, making every remaining match critical.

The Punjab Kings are also in contention for the final playoff spot, currently holding 13 points from 13 matches. The team controls its own destiny but faces a precarious situation following a five-match losing streak. A win against Lucknow would take Punjab Kings to 15 points, a tally that could prove sufficient to secure a berth, provided other contenders do not exceed that score. The Delhi Capitals face the toughest challenge, needing a win against the Kolkata Knight Riders to reach 14 points, but they are hampered by a severe net run rate disadvantage of -0.871.
