Mariners finally playing up to lofty expectations with a six-game winning streak
Seattle takes 2.5-game AL West lead as pitching rotation and power hitting drive turnaround

The Seattle Mariners have extended their winning streak to six consecutive games, highlighted by a 3-2 walk-off victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. The result improves the club’s record to 31-29, granting them a 2.5-game lead in the American League West. This surge marks a significant shift from a difficult start to the 2026 season, during which the team spent much of April and May below .500.

Over the current six-game stretch, the Mariners have demonstrated improved defensive stability, yielding just 12 runs in total. They have allowed more than two runs in only one contest, a 7-6 win on Friday night. This defensive tightness complements an offensive strategy that has leaned heavily into power hitting. The team finished May with 42 home runs, tying the Chicago White Sox for the most in Major League Baseball.

Center fielder Julio Rodríguez has been a primary contributor to this offensive surge, accounting for 10 of those home runs in May alone. Rodríguez, who has historically struggled with slow starts, indicated that the team’s performance is now aligning with its potential. “The hits are falling. The guys who can hit home runs are hitting the home runs. And, I feel like everything’s coming together now,” Rodríguez said.

Manager Dan Wilson has implemented a six-man pitching rotation rather than a traditional five-man setup, utilising veteran Luis Castillo in relief of starter Bryce Miller. Castillo, the highest-paid player on the roster, has accepted this role, helping the rotation achieve the seventh-lowest earned run average in the majors at 3.72. Castillo stated that the entire rotation is willing to contribute in the bullpen if needed, noting his pride in the group’s consistency.

The Mariners are achieving these results despite the continued absence of key players. Catcher Cal Raleigh remains sidelined with a right oblique strain, while All-Star utilityman Brendan Donovan has been out since May 15 with a left groin strain. The team entered the 2026 season with high expectations, aiming for its first World Series appearance in franchise history, less than a year after being eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series.

Wilson has expressed satisfaction with the team’s all-around play, citing consistent batting and pitching as drivers of their recent success. “Swinging the bat really well, and what we’ve seen on the mound has been so consistent,” Wilson said. “You do both of those things and you play good defense, good things happen consistently. And, I think we feel like we’re in a much better spot that way.”

While the Mariners had a 10-15 record in late April, making postseason qualification appear unlikely at that stage, the current form suggests a potential turnaround. However, it remains to be seen whether this six-game streak is a sustainable indicator of long-term success or a short-term aberration. The team’s ability to maintain this level of performance will be critical as they look to solidify their position in the AL West.
