Marchand claims first European title in Paris

French swimmer Léon Marchand secured his first European continental title on Saturday, winning the 200m butterfly final at the championships in Paris. The 24-year-old completed the race in 1 minute 51.72 seconds, establishing the world’s best time of the year.

Marchand finished 2.34 seconds ahead of Hungary’s Richard Marton, who took silver. Greece’s Apostolos Siskos claimed bronze, finishing a further 0.04 seconds behind the Hungarian medallist. The victory marked France’s first individual title at the current championships.

The win represents a significant recovery for Marchand, who has been managing a thigh injury sustained at the French nationals in June. The injury resulted in a reduced programme for the athlete at the European event. Earlier in the championships, Marchand had won a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay.

Speaking after the race, Marchand described the atmosphere in the pool as “absolutely mad” and noted that his final 50 metres were among his best performances in recent times. He suggested that a faster start might have improved his overall time, given the strength of his closing lap.

Marchand, a four-time Olympic gold medallist, is scheduled to compete in the 400m freestyle on Sunday. His performance in Paris comes two years after his successes at the Paris Olympic Games, marking a return to form in his home city.
