Manchester United’s defensive pattern puts pressure on Carrick
United have conceded twice in every Premier League match this season, with Michael Carrick acknowledging the team must reduce the number of shots and goals allowed.
Manchester United’s defensive record has become an early-season concern after the club conceded twice again in a 2–2 draw with Everton. The result means United have allowed two goals in each of their Premier League matches so far.
Everton’s goals came from Tyrique George and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, while the hosts registered 18 shots, six of them on target. Carrick said United “can’t ignore” the problem and must improve collectively.
The goals conceded have come in different circumstances. Hull scored twice from set pieces, while Ipswich’s goals followed a combination of individual errors and defensive lapses. Carrick described Everton’s two long-range strikes as exceptional efforts, but the broader pattern remains a concern.
The issue is particularly significant because United did not strengthen their defence in the recent transfer window. Yahoo Sports noted that the club conceded only twice across the equivalent fixtures last season, although the current sample remains small.
Carrick said United needed to concede fewer shots as well as goals, pointing to the volume of opportunities allowed against Everton. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens has been among the more encouraging performers, but the defensive burden on the team is increasing.
