Manchester United Women open season with defeat to London City Lionesses
Eva Olid and captain Maya Le Tissier identified confidence, movement and training standards as priorities after United’s 2-1 loss.
Manchester United Women began the season with a 2-1 defeat to London City Lionesses, leaving new manager Eva Olid demanding a more consistent performance from her side.
Speaking to club media, Olid said United’s first half did not reflect their work in training. She said the team lacked confidence and support when attempting to play through London City’s early pressing.
United improved after the interval, but Olid said the response lasted for only about 40 minutes and was insufficient across a full match. She said the side would need to address its shortcomings in training before facing Chelsea next week.
Captain Maya Le Tissier also pointed to a lack of confidence and movement, saying United struggled to cope with London City’s press. She said the team’s late fightback came too late to change the result.
Sim Awujo scored after coming off the bench, in what the supplied Yahoo Sports report described as her first league goal for United. Le Tissier said the substitute’s contribution showed the team continued to push for goals.
Le Tissier added that adapting to a different manager would take time, while describing the club’s new recruits as influential. Olid said she remained confident United could compete with any opponent if they played with greater belief.
