Manchester United prioritises institutional stability over title ambitions under Carrick
With a quiet summer of recruitment and a focus on organisational stabilisation, Manchester United are preparing for the 2025-26 Premier League season under a new strategic direction.
Manchester United have entered the 2025-26 season with Michael Carrick appointed as permanent manager, marking a decisive shift towards institutional stability following his successful interim tenure. The appointment, confirmed via a two-year contract in May, ends three years of managerial uncertainty and signals a departure from the high-cost recruitment strategies that characterised the eras of Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag.
The club’s approach this summer has been defined by restraint rather than the influx of high-profile signings required to fit specific tactical systems. Carrick’s strategy centres on utilising existing squad strengths, with the primary objective of securing a top-five Premier League finish and progression in the Champions League. This focus on long-term organisational stabilisation contrasts sharply with the historical expectation of immediate title contention that has dominated the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.
To bolster the midfield, United activated a $47.5 million release clause to sign Youri Tielemans, described as a deep-lying playmaker with excellent distribution but questionable defensive qualities. Additionally, Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea for approximately $65 million, providing midfield steel and serving as a partial replacement for the departed Casemiro. These moves are viewed as measures to raise the team’s floor rather than propel them into immediate title contention.
The reliance on Bruno Fernandes remains a critical factor in United’s prospects. The Portuguese midfielder recorded 21 assists last season, creating 54% more chances than the second-best player in the Premier League. Analysts note that the summer signings are designed to mitigate the risk of Fernandes’ form dropping from his record-breaking 99th percentile performance to a more standard 80th percentile output, which would have left the team outside European contention.
Off the pitch, the handling of Marcus Rashford has lacked the turbulence of previous years. The forward remains at the club in a reduced squad role after failing to attract a suitor, having averaged 0.38 expected goals per 90 minutes in La Liga last season. United suffered a 4-2 defeat to AC Milan in a pre-season friendly in Wroclaw, with Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, and Lisandro Martinez making their first pre-season appearances, but the club remains focused on gradual improvement over immediate silverware.
